Th. Eggensperger OP and U. Engel OP - Members of the Scientific Committee
[22.01.2016] It is from the celebration of the Chapter of Trogir in 2013 that the idea of a Congress for the Mission of the Order was proposed as an important moment of the Jubilee celebration of the 800 years of the confirmation of the Order in 2016. From 17th to 21st of January 2017 the congress was celebrated in the University of the Dominican Order in Rome, “Angelicum”. More than 600 participants from all over the world – Moniales, Brothers, Sisters, members of the Dominican Lay Fraternities and the Dominican Youth Movement – have reflected about the social and political responsibility of the Mission, about Preaching as Encounter and the service of the Order for Church and Society.
Prof. Dr. Thomas Eggensperger OP, M.A., and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Engel OP (Institut M.-Dominique Chenu Berlin / Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Berlin), participated in the Congress. Both were nominated by the Master of the Order, Dr. Bruno Cadoré OP, as members of the Scientific Committee which has prepared the international encounter. Ulrich Engel served in Rome as a facilitator of different working groups, Thomas Eggensperger presented the paper “Seis “líneas de fractura” (Pierre Claverie OP): Desafíos para nuestra misión en el siglo XXI” [engl.: Six “Lines of Fracture” (Pierre Claverie OP): Challenges For Our Mission in the 21st Century]. This text was written by an international group of Dominicans from Germany (Institut M.-Dominique Chenu), Belgium (Espaces Bruxelles), Italy (Espaces Centro “Giorgio La Pira”) and Turkey (Istituto degli Studi Domenicani – Istanbul – DoSt-I).
The Congress and the Jubilee closed with a Mess with Pope Francis celebrated on 21st of January 2017 at the Basilica of St John Lateran, Rome.
